State Parks & Reservoirs
There
are more than thirty Indiana State Parks
and Reservoirs throughout the state,
and some particularly nice ones here in northeast
Indiana. Many have nice RV campgrounds that
serve as a great home base from which you can
explore the wide variety of outdoor recreation
offered at the parks and beyond. North of Fort
Wayne you can enjoy small boat rentals, swimming,
fishing, hiking, and much more at Pokagon
and Chain O'Lakes State Parks.
South of Fort Wayne you'll find water for bigger
boats at Huntington, Salamonie
and Mississinewa Reservoirs.
Experience Amish Country
About
an hour northwest of Fort Wayne you'll find
Indiana's largest Amish community. The Amish
are known for their high quality craftsmanship,
so there is some great shopping here. In Shipshewana
you'll find an abundance of local shops with
homemade and hand-crafted items, Amish-made
furniture stores, Amish-made cheese and meats
shops, and the Shipshewana Flea Market. Just
a few miles away is a really nice campground
on the Little Elkhart River. It offers loads
of recreation opportunities itself, plus it's
connected by hiking trails to Bonneyville
Mill Park where there is a working
grist mill (in operation for over 150 years)
and much more.
See Lake Michigan &
Indiana Dunes
You owe it to yourself to see the amazing dunes
along Lake Michigan, just a couple of
hours away in northwestern Indiana. Check out
the lake, beaches, dunes, bogs, marshes and
more at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
or Indiana Dunes State Park.
If you want a little bigger adventure, try sport
fishing with one of the many Lake Michigan Charter
Captains.
Enjoy the
Unexpected
Indiana
has some unique local and county parks to explore,
and many of them have nice RV campgrounds. France
Park near Logansport (just a couple
of hours southwest of Fort Wayne) offers activities
for all seasons. In the winter you can enjoy
ice fishing, ice skating, sledding, cross-country
skiing, and snowmobiling. Warm weather activities
include boating and fishing (on lakes or Wabash
River), swimming, scuba diving (rentals available),
disc golf, hiking, miniature golf, mountain
biking, picnicking, and more.
Find Family Amusement
Experience another era at a classic family
destination, the Indiana Beach amusement
park. There you can enjoy rides, roller coasters,
the boardwalk, games, swimming, shopping, restaurants,
and a water park. It's fun for children and
adults alike. RVers staying at the Indiana Beach
Campground are also convenient to miniature
golf, a game room, batting cages and more, plus
they get perks for the park.
